Dr Hilton Kyle
BA (Open), PGCE, PhD (Aero Eng), BSc (Mech Eng),
Born and raised in South Africa, I completed a degree in mechanical engineering (first class honours) at the University of Cape Town before coming to Bristol University to do a PhD in aerospace engineering. On completion of the degree I did a Postgraduate Degree in Secondary Education (PGCE) before starting teaching at one of Bristol’s leading independent schools as a teacher of physics. I have also subsequently completed a humanities degree at the Open University.

My current responsibilities include being a head of year with pastoral oversight for year 10 students, helping out with our school’s outdoor pursuits program (including DoE), coaching a cricket team and running an engineering club. I also do our school’s Oxbridge preparation for engineering and physics applicants.
I have always truly loved teaching. As an undergraduate and postgraduate student I regularly provided individual tuition to secondary students in maths and physics, so becoming a full-time teacher was a natural transition on completing my studies.

I don’t believe that maths and physics are for everyone! But what I do believe is that everybody has the capacity, with the right sort of instruction and encouragement, to become far more proficient in these subjects and, with that, be able to achieve much more than they think possible.
