Gaining entrance to Oxbridge is understandably difficult: candidates are in competition against very bright and able students.
The prime determinant that governs entry to physics, engineering or natural sciences is ability and this is assessed primarily through two assessments:
- A pre-interview written assessment (PAT for Oxford, ENGAA and NSAA for Cambridge)
- One or more interviews involving the discussion of previously unseen problems
I take candidates through both forms of assessment with the aim of giving them a sense of what to expect, as well as illustrating the various thinking skills that may be of benefit. The ability to think on one’s feet, and the aptitude to express that understanding coherently, is key to a successful interview.
